DESCRIPTION

Barcelona has more than a million and a half inhabitants, and is the capital city of Catalonia. Barcelona, thanks to its location and infrastructures, is nowadays an important axis regarding life and economy in the western Mediterranean and southern Europe.

The Layetan Iberian tribe was the first to inhabit the area, later they were conquered by Rome, in the year 133 B.C., by general Cornelius Escipio, who founded Colonia Iulia Augusta Faventia Paterna Barcino, who later became the current Barcelona.

Due to its extense history, visitors can find different Barcelonas: the Old District, the Gothic Quarter, which is a unique and uncomparable area which reflects the splendour of the Middle Ages. In this quarter you can find the City Hall, as well as the Palau de la Generalitat, head office of the Government of Catalonia.

The Barcelona outside the city walls -with the construction of the Paseo de Gracia and the Eixample, as well as the annexation of other villages belonging to the Barcelona plains- is nowadays the real city center. You can find here the shopping center, along the Rambla, and the economic and financial center, along the Av. Diagonal. This quarter has a very functional design ruled in squares which enables circulation.
